Important Announcements

What a great Fall we've had, thanks to our parent volunteers and school staff! The Halloween Parade and Pumpkin Patch were adorable, the Food Drive donated almost 100 lbs of food items to the local food pantry, the School Store will continue to sell new items, and the Used Book Sale emptied your shelves and brought cheap books to our students!  Family Fridays, Desserts Around the World, and Movie Night were big hits as well. Thank you for your support!

October 19, 2017

Meeting began at 9:00 a.m.

Jessica Corbin (PTA Vice-President) welcomed parents and introduced the rest of the 2017-2018 PTA Executive Board: Maha Jawed (President), Emily Ho (Treasurer), Vanessa Aja-Sigmon (Recording Secretary/Title 1 Representative), and Diana Vargas (Corresponding Secretary).

Event and Fundraiser Updates - Thank you for your PTA Dues/Contributions, which are still being accepted if you haven’t yet paid ($20 per family). Box Tops donations are ongoing the entire school year. Cherrydale catalog sales end October 20. Picture Day Re-Takes will be held November 15. Ragamuffin Parade participants should have received a Fruity Friday coupon for participating - thank you for a great day! Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place November 16. The Day of Gratitude on November 17 will thank and recognize the various elected officials who donated important funding to our school.

Upcoming Events - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:

-The new after-school School Store was a success and will continue on October 20 and 27. The School Store is an easy volunteer opportunity for parents/guardians who arrive a few minute early to pick up their child after school.

-Cupcake Friday will take place after school as part of the School Store on October 27. Cupcake donations and volunteers needed.

-The October 31 Halloween Parade will feature our students in costume parading around the school yard. Please refer to the flyer that went home to see the schedule by class so that you can attend and take pictures. A Pumpkin Patch will allow students to take home a pumpkin in a lunch tote, which have been donated by Apple Bank.

-The Used Book Sale is November 21st. Donations of used children’s books AND shifts of volunteers are needed.

SLT Elections - The candidates for the election of 2 open parent positions on the School Leadership Team (SLT) are: Bonnie Lee, Michele Costing, Dragalina Pakin, Ting Chen, Toshiba Mushtaq, Rawan Elfouri, Mariam Xhue, Wu Yu Zhi, Yi Qin Cin, and Fatehi Ali. Ballots were passed out, and votes counted. Thank you to those who ran, and congratulations to our new confirmed SLT Members:  Bonnie Lee and Michele Costin.

Guest Speaker/Canned Food Drive - Rev. David Aja-Sigmon represented the Bay Ridge Food Pantry on 68th and 4th, where our November 1-17th Food Drive donations will be given. Non-perishables such as rice, oatmeal, canned vegetables, and toiletries are most needed. School community members are welcome to use the pantry as well on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 11-1 pm.

Treasurer’s Report - please refer to the summary of September/October income and expenses as part of today’s agenda packet.

Title 1 Report  - Vanessa Aja-Sigmon explained what it means to be a Title 1 school and what a Title 1 Parent Committee does. 1% of Title 1 school allocations go to parent resources and support. Be on the lookout for monthly community-formation events and workshops, and let us know how we can support you as parents.

Principal’s Report - Ms. Agatha Alicandro shared that the September Meet and Greet went well and thanked those who attended. Reminders that Free Breakfast (79th St) and Early Drop-Off (78th St) are available each morning at 7:45 am. Teachers are waiting at all doors to welcome students each morning. We now have a Class Parent (teacher-parent liaison) assigned to every classroom - thank you!  We now have bilingual (Chinese-English) Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms. Grants: $50,000 was donated by Senator Golden towards technology updates; $250,000 from Assemblywoman Pamela Harris for bathroom upgrades (will begin in 1st floor); and Councilman Vincent Gentile provided $50,000 for an after-school music program through Midori and Friends for grades 3-4. The new School Messenger Service allows us to text/email updates to parents, usually towards the end of the day. If you miss the phone call from our school, it will go to voicemail, so please check your phones before you call the school. Please return the flyer with contact information so that you can receive SMS updates. Tuesday afternoons: teachers are in school until 3:55 pm, reserved for Parent Engagement.

School Safety Meeting - Ms. Connie Sciolto led this DOE-required segment of the meeting.  Safety is foremost in our school community. School Safety Committee meetings are held once a month to regularly evaluate and improve safety. Students will undergo regular fire and other evacuation plans during school. At each practice and/or real-life emergency, bags containing blue cards and other emergency supplies (first aid kit, flashlights, etc.) are taken with students and staff during an evacuation. It is *critical* that blue cards be updated with emergency contact info, especially phone numbers. Building Response Teams (BRT) assigned to each grade are responsible in the case of an emergency to strategize. Every door is equipped with an alarm. Always check in with radio and TV in case of school closings. The Discipline Code should be abided by among students; parents should review the code with their child.

November Raffle Basket was awarded to the winner. Thank you for participating and donating to the 5th Grade Senior Events!
